Corvin Park, the oldest public park in the western Romanian city of Hunedoara, will be restored under an EU-funded project worth more than RON 44.24 million, with the works scheduled for completion in just over a year.

The project will also cover an adjacent area between Corvin Park and the Emanuil Gojdu Economic College under a separate investment, creating a new promenade for residents.

'This is a very ambitious and important project because it concerns one of Hunedoara's landmark areas, a park established in 1956 that has never undergone a comprehensive restoration,' Hunedoara Mayor Dan Boboutanu said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The redevelopment project includes the creation of a shallow ornamental water feature with a pedestrian footbridge and an integrated fountain on the site previously occupied by an illegally constructed building.

The park will also feature a large children's playground, a running track approximately 320 metres long, paved walkways, table tennis and chess tables, while all existing urban furniture will be replaced.

A single-storey building housing community facilities, including public toilets, will be built next to the water feature.

The mayor also highlighted that an additional 136 trees and more than 1,000 perennial plants will be planted in Corvin Park and the surrounding area.

'In the end, I believe it will become the city's most beautiful park and once again the favourite place for the majority of Hunedoara's residents, regardless of age,' Boboutanu concluded.

The total value of the Corvin Park restoration project and the redevelopment of the adjacent area amounts to RON 44.97 million, of which RON 43.15 million is non-repayable funding, including RON 37.49 million in EU co-financing and RON 5.72 million from the state budget.
