Romanian students competing at the International Chemistry Olympiad held in the Republic of Uzbekistan won one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal, the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) informed on Sunday.

Ursachescu Matei Gabriel, from 'B.P. Hasdeu' National College in Buzau, won the gold medal; Alexe Mihnea Gabriel, from 'Tudor Vianu' National College of Computer Science in Bucharest, won a silver medal; Stanciu Mihai, from 'Moise Nicoara' National College in Arad, also won a silver medal; while Anghel Tudor Stefan, from 'B.P. Hasdeu' National College in Buzau, was awarded the bronze medal.

'The students benefited from rigorous theoretical and practical training provided by teaching staff from the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Bucharest. The team was led by Professor Daniela Bogdan, of 'Sf. Sava' National College in Bucharest, and Associate Professor Mihaela Matache, of the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Bucharest,' the ministry said in a press release posted on its Facebook page.

The 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2026) was held in Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, from July 10 to 19, 2026.

'Congratulations to the students and to everyone who supported them! At the level of the Ministry of Education and Research, the Olympiad was coordinated by the Directorate for Olympiads, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education. The Ministry of Education and Research supports the participation of Romania's national teams in international Olympiads by covering participation fees, travel costs and daily allowances during their stay, as well as by organising the local, county, Bucharest municipal and national stages of the competitions that precede the international Olympiads,' the ministry's post added.
