Modernising the Air Force represents a strategic priority for Romania, and major procurement programmes, as well as ongoing training activities, are increasing the operational capability of this branch of the armed forces and ensuring the integration of the latest capabilities, President Nicusor Dan said on Monday on the occasion of Romanian Aviation and Air Force Day.

'Our respect and gratitude go to those who have served and continue to serve Romanian Aviation and the Air Force - military personnel and civilian staff alike, whether currently active, in reserve or retired. Through their professionalism, courage and dedication, they all carry out essential missions for the defence of the country, contribute to the security of national and allied airspace, and intervene whenever necessary to support Romanian citizens,' the head of state said.

He recalled that Romanian aviation has been shaped by the contributions of remarkable figures - Aurel Vlaicu, Traian Vuia, Henri Coanda and Elie Carafoli - whose achievements placed Romania in the history of world aeronautics.

The president also highlighted the sacrifice of all those who lost their lives during combat missions, in theatres of operations, military exercises or emergency interventions. Their memory and example remain a source of inspiration for new generations of aviators, he added.

'In the current security context, marked by the continuation of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine and by persistent challenges to regional stability, the Romanian Air Force plays a particularly important role in defending national airspace and strengthening NATO's deterrence and defence posture in the Black Sea region and on the Alliance's eastern flank. Together with our allies and partners, Romanian military personnel make an important contribution to the joint effort to reinforce Euro-Atlantic security,' Nicusor Dan further stated.
