The development of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) aviation component will continue through investments in modern aircraft, training and infrastructure, interim Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu said on Monday, July 20, Romanian Aviation Day.

Predoiu added that these investments will increase the capacity to respond in medical emergencies, fires, collective accidents, natural disasters, public order missions and border protection operations.

'The aircraft of the General Aviation Inspectorate transport patients in critical condition, respond in serious accidents, rescue people from hard-to-reach mountain areas, transfer newborns and premature babies and participate in extinguishing forest fires, search and rescue missions and operations with multiple victims,' Predoiu is quoted as saying in a press statement released by MAI.

At the same time, it supports the missions of the Romanian Police by supervising road traffic, monitoring crowded areas, searching for missing or wanted persons and coordinating operative interventions carried out on large areas.

In cooperation with the Romanian Border Police, the MAI aircraft contribute to the surveillance of land, river and sea borders, to the detection of illegal crossings, to the fight against smuggling and cross-border crime, as well as to the protection of the national territory and the external border of the European Union.

'Through these missions, the MAI aviation directly supports the operative activity of several departments of the ministry: saving lives, protecting communities, traffic surveillance, securing borders and supporting the interventions of the Police, Gendarmerie, firefighters and emergency medical services,' according to MAI.

Predoiu said that behind each response there are complex teams: pilots, engineers, technicians, doctors, nurses, paramedics, rescuers and specialists of the operative structures.

'At the core of every mission is people. They transform technical performance into the rescue, protection and safety of citizens. I want to thank all those who serve in the aviation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and all Romanian aviators - military and civilian - for their professionalism, discipline and devotion,' he said.
