Industrial production fell by 3.3% as gross series, in the first five months of this year compared with the same period in 2025, while as series adjusted according to the number of working days and seasonality, declined by 3.1%, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Friday.

Thus, between 1 January and 31 May 2026, compared with the period 1 January to 31 May 2025, industrial production (gross series) decreased by 3.3%, due to declines recorded in manufacturing (-4.5%) and the extractive industry (-1.8%). On the other hand, the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning increased by 4.1%.

Industrial production, as adjusted series, was 3.1% lower in the first five months of 2026, as a result of declines in manufacturing (-4.3%) and the extractive industry (-1.8%). By contrast, the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning rose by 3.6%.

According to the INS, in May this year, industrial production (gross series) increased by 3.1% compared with the previous month, due to activity in manufacturing (+4.7%) and the extractive industry (+1.5%). At the opposite end was the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning, which recorded a 7.7% decline.

As adjusted series, industrial production decreased by 2.8% month on month, amid declines in all three industrial sectors: the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-3.2%), the manufacturing industry (-2.4%) and the extractive industry (-1.1%).

Compared with the same month of the previous year, industrial production (gross series) fell by 7.3%, as a result of the performances recorded by the manufacturing industry (-7.9%), the extractive industry (-5.0%) and the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-3.8%).

Compared with the same period, industrial production, as adjusted series, was 5.3% lower, due to declines in the manufacturing industry (-5.5%), the extractive industry (-4.8%) and the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy, gas, hot water and air conditioning (-3.1%).
