Romanian firefighters deployed to France intervened on Wednesday in the Trevillach-Montalba area, where they carried out monitoring operations and worked to mitigate the effects of the wildfires that have affected the area in recent days.

'The missions focused on thoroughly inspecting the affected areas, identifying and extinguishing remaining active hotspots, cooling areas with high temperatures, and eliminating the risk of reignition and further spread of the fire,' the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) said in a press release.

The operations were carried out in cooperation with two French fire crews, under the coordination of the French authorities and in accordance with the operational plan established for the affected area.

'The situation on the ground continues to require constant monitoring due to the presence of isolated hotspots and weather conditions that are conducive to reignition. Throughout yesterday, temperatures continued to rise, while stronger winds, including gusts, could lead to the reignition of existing hotspots or the rapid development of new ones,' the press release said.

For Thursday, the risk of vegetation and forest fires remains high in southern France. In the Pyrenees-Orientales department, where Romania's specialised forest firefighting module is deployed, the fire risk remains at red alert level, requiring a high state of readiness and a response capability adapted to developments on the ground.

Romanian firefighters remain ready to intervene under the coordination of their French counterparts whenever required, contributing to the European response to wildfires and helping to protect communities and the environment.
