Traffic on the Giurgiu-Ruse Friendship Bridge linking Romania and Bulgaria has resumed in both directions for all categories of vehicles after Bulgarian authorities completed work on the bridge's carriageway.

Bulgarian authorities informed the Giurgiu Territorial Border Police Inspectorate, through the Joint Contact Centre in Giurgiu, that the rehabilitated carriageway on the Danube bridge reopened to traffic on June 30, restoring two-way traffic for all types of vehicles, inspectorate spokesperson Nicoleta Badita told AGERPRES on Wednesday.

She said the rehabilitation project launched by the Bulgarian side two years ago will continue after July 1, with work focusing on the bridge's bearings and steel structure without affecting road traffic.

'From now on, namely during the July-September period, works will continue on the bridge's infrastructure, specifically its bearings and steel structure, without affecting road traffic in any way,' Badita said.

The full rehabilitation project is expected to be completed in September 2026.

Until then, motorists will be able to cross the bridge without the traffic restrictions, temporary traffic lights or manual traffic control that had been in place for almost two years. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Camelia Bigam; EN - writing by: Simona Iacob)
