Powerful overnight storms affected 60 localities across 20 counties and Bucharest, with firefighters responding to remove fallen trees and pump water from homes and basements.
According to a press release from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), a man was killed in the commune of Ganeasa, Ilfov County, after a tree fell onto the car he was in. In total, nearly 470 vehicles were damaged.
By 6.00 am, firefighters nationwide had responded to pump water from 45 homes, 35 courtyards, 30 cellars and basements, and 17 streets. They also removed 960 fallen trees and 48 utility poles, and cleared damaged structural elements from the roofs of 60 buildings.

The severe weather caused damage in the counties of Alba, Bihor, Braila, Buzau, Cluj, Calarasi, Dolj, Galati, Giurgiu, Harghita, Hunedoara, Ialomita, Ilfov, Maramures, Mures, Satu Mare, Sibiu, Salaj, Tulcea and Valcea, as well as in Bucharest.
Teams from the Bucharest-Ilfov Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISUBIF) are continuing to respond to more than 1,950 emergency calls received following the severe weather over the past few hours.

To keep the public informed, authorities issued 58 alerts through the RO-ALERT emergency warning system across 28 counties and Bucharest in response to the severe weather warnings, as well as nine messages via the TVR crawl system in eight counties.
'The institutions operating under the coordination and operational coordination of the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU), together with the other structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, remain on duty around the clock to protect the public,' the release also reads.
