The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) decided on Wednesday to begin the process of suspending President Nicusor Dan and to launch procedures aimed at triggering early elections, according to a party press release.

The decision was made by AUR's National Leadership Council (CNC) during an extraordinary meeting held in Alexandria, Teleorman County.

The 135 CNC members present voted unanimously to initiate the procedure for suspending President Nicusor Dan and to begin talks with other political parties to secure support for the move.

According to AUR, the reasons behind the initiative include 'excluding a significant part of the Romanian people from decisions concerning the country's future' and 'the refusal to nominate a second candidate for prime minister, as required by the Constitution.'

The National Leadership Council also voted unanimously in favour of 'returning to the people by launching the procedures for early elections.'

During the meeting, the party also decided that its MPs would neither attend nor vote in favour of any coalition government proposed by Nicusor Dan. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Ghita; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
