A historical-reenactment troupe from Hungary, Debreceni Történelmi Korok Hagyományorzo Egyesület, will present authentic medieval combat techniques for the first time at Romania's oldest event of its kind, the Medieval Sighisoara Festival, running July 24 - 26.

'Sighisoara launches the 31st edition of Romania's oldest and most authentic medieval festival. The Municipality of Sighisoara invites residents and tourists to take part between July 24 and 26, in the 31st edition of the 'Medieval Sighisoara Festival', the oldest medieval festival in Romania. For three days, the Medieval Citadel of Sighisoara will host concerts, medieval combat demonstrations, medieval music, theatre and dance, street animation and activities for all ages (...). This year's edition also brings a first: medieval combat demonstrations by Debreceni Történelmi Korok Hagyományorzo Egyesület from Hungary, a group participating for the first time in the event,' the Sighisoara City Hall announced in a press release.

Alongside the Hungarian knights, festival-goers will encounter knights, ladies, minstrels, drummers and other characters roaming the streets and the Citadel Square throughout the three-day event.

The programme also includes the Asserculis Mercenaries, performances by the Sighisoara Citadel's Drummer, the Woodlands' Knights, equestrian acrobatics by Christian and Toni Haiducu and their two horses, Peregrinii, the Ladies of the XXXI Seal, Funny Art, United Guilds, and local historical reenactment group Compania Dragonului.

The 31st edition of the Sighisoara Medieval Festival takes place under the High Patronage of Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown, and will feature several new elements.

'A novelty of this year's edition is the children's area set up near the Sighisoara City Hall. The space will host activities and interactive workshops, historical board games, theatre and percussion shows, stilt-walkers, living statues and jesters. All these are specially designed for children and for families who choose to spend the three festival days together,' the organisers said.

Another new feature is the gastronomic area in the Ducklings' Square, which will host a tavern, a medieval picnic and a local gastronomy workshop.

City Mayor Ioan-Iulian Sirbu said the setting itself is part of the festival's appeal: 'Few events have the privilege of taking place in a location that tells part of the story on its own. In Sighisoara we have a unique, authentic backdrop, and the festival makes full use of it. That is why we focused on interactive experiences, on the presence of artists and characters throughout the Citadel, and on activities that directly involve our visitors.'

The main stage will be set up in the Citadel Square, hosting concerts by Tandarica & Keo & Alina, Trooper, Mircea Baniciu, Florin Sasarman and Adrian Ivanitchi, among others.
