The Merops counter-unmanned aircraft system, made available to Romania by the United States of America under a bilateral strategic partnership, has been made operational and become integrated with the defence architecture the Romanian Army, the Defence Ministry (MApN) informed on Wednesday.

According to MApN, before being put into service, the system went through the necessary stages of testing, evaluation and operational validation.

The Defence General Staff is permanently adapting the airspace surveillance and defence system, in order to strengthen the reaction capacity and increase the level of protection of the population.

According to MApN, Merops is a modern technological solution, based on artificial intelligence algorithms, intended for detecting, tracking and neutralising small aerial targets flying at low altitudes.

The integration of the counter-unmanned aircraft system contributes to strengthening the capabilities of the Romanian Army to detect and counter the threats generated by unmanned aircraft systems, completing the measures already implemented to protect the national airspace.
