The National Liberal Party (PNL) Extraordinary Congress, at which the party's new leadership structure will be decided, began on Sunday at Romexpo.

PNL leader Ilie Bolojan, who is running for a new mandate at the head of the party, was greeted with applause by those in attendance, who chanted his name.

Only the current party leader, Ilie Bolojan, has submitted a candidacy for the party presidency. He is presenting the following team: first vice-president - Dan Motreanu; secretary-general - Robert Sighiartau; vice-presidents - Mircea Abrudean, Ioan Popa, Siegfried Muresan, Oana Gheorghiu, Alexandru Muraru, Dragos Pislaru, Florin Roman and Gabriela Horga.

The Congress will also decide on the party's new Statute, which aims to change the current leadership structure.

Proceedings are taking place against a backdrop of internal division, with two camps emerging within the party, one centred around the current PNL leader Ilie Bolojan and the other around First Vice-President Adrian Vestea, the prime minister-designate.

Adrian Vestea is not present at the Congress. He sent a message on Saturday in which he said the history and identity of the National Liberal Party are 'being thrown away.' He believes that, through the Congress convened by Ilie Bolojan, the 'real' Liberals are being removed from the party's leadership.
